Total Cost of Healthcare: Transparency in Action

Employers say that Total Cost of Healthcare (TCoC) is still one of the most puzzling issues they face in health system transformation. As attempts to improve the healthcare system take place, many efforts focus on aspects of this issue--such as addressing waste in healthcare, how to arrive at the cost of care, and how to decrease the cost of care while maintaining quality of health services. Questions asked include:
  • Do healthcare charges for the same procedures differ around the country and/or according to site of care?
  • Do we know what drives the variability in costs, when variation is identified?

Though much is being learned, clarity has still not been achieved around questions of how TCoC is being defined and/or measured.

Employers, providers, insurers and other health professionals can learn more about this issue by attending the half-day Total Cost of Healthcare: Transparency in Action Summit. This summit is jointly provided by the NM Coalition for Healthcare Value and HealthInsight NM and is offered on September 18, 2018 (see below for place and time).

Note: The Total Cost of Care Summit is supported by the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement (NRHI). Getting to Affordability is a NRHI initiative that aligns regional partners in their efforts to produce, share and use standardized, high-quality healthcare cost information. NRHI is leading the Getting to Affordability initiative to standardize how cost information is reported in 11 regions across the U.S. While their data reflects local practices, the regional partners are producing standard provider cost measures that can be applied anywhere in the country. This cost transparency can drive the realignment of the healthcare marketplace, and competitive market forces can help redirect wasteful spending and reward high quality care.

Obesity: It’s Complicated!

We all pay the tab for obesity.  How are we tackling obesity in the workplace?

Groups as diverse as Forbes, Commonwealth Fund and the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions note that obesity (which continues to rise in the U.S.), is NOT just a major public health threat along the lines of the opioid epidemic, but also a huge economic problem for employers and insurance payers.
