Total Cost of Healthcare: Transparency in Action

Employers say that Total Cost of Healthcare (TCoC) is still one of the most puzzling issues they face in health system transformation. As attempts to improve the healthcare system take place, many efforts focus on aspects of this issue--such as addressing waste in healthcare, how to arrive at the cost of care, and how to decrease the cost of care while maintaining quality of health services. Questions asked include:
  • Do healthcare charges for the same procedures differ around the country and/or according to site of care?
  • Do we know what drives the variability in costs, when variation is identified?

Though much is being learned, clarity has still not been achieved around questions of how TCoC is being defined and/or measured.
