About the Coalition

 

 

at the tableThe New Mexico Coalition for Healthcare Value (Coalition), a 501(c)3, employer-led, multi-stakeholder dues-paying member coalition works collaboratively to enhance population health in our state by increasing the value of our healthcare system with a focus on transparency, quality, and cost.  

Having originated from a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Aligning Forces for Quality (AF4Q) initiative, the NM Coalition has grown into an independent, dues-paying member  organization. It provides employer tools, data and information, as well as impartial forums where private and public partners engage in aligning efforts that drive meaningful change in the state's healthcare system. The Coalition's employer members best use their strength in numbers by working together and having a strong “voice” in advocacy, policy and sharing of best practices. 

"The Coalition provides needed services for our members, like valued learning seminars with top speakers, for healthcare purchasers, providers and insurers on relevant concerns, best practices, and innovations taking place in the field," said Mark Tyndall, current Chair of the Coalition.  "We follow trends, policies and advances in the healthcare system, like pricing transparency, and we also research and publish practical employer tools--like our Employers Guide to NM Health Plans--to improve our healthcare system."  Mary Romero-Hart, Vice Chair of the Coalition said the Coalition is strengthening the combined voice of its employer members, and, as such, "welcomes new members, both small and larger employers/purchasers, in joining us."

  Susan Wilson

   Executive Director of the NM Coalition, Susan joined the Coalition early in 2019, after having worked in          Southwest  healthcare, insurance, oil & gas, and nonprofit industries for nearly 20 years.  Susan is an         expert   in strategic planning, nonprofit development, marketing and branding. Before coming to the   Coalitiion, she   served as Vice President of Business Development at New Mexico Mutual, and as head of   marketing, public   and provider relations, and governmental affairs for Lovelace Health System. She serves as marketing chair on the Executive Board for United Way of Central New Mexico and is also a member of the state's Economic FORUM. She has been recognized as a 2011 Woman of Influence by Albuquerque Business First, and also continues her work as president of Susan J Wilson Consulting, a strategic planning and marketing firm.

  Christine Hollis, Special Assistant to the Executive Director, is a health communication and policy   specialist.    Before coming to the Coalition, she coordinated the New Mexico DoH effort, funded by CMMS, that developed a State Improvement Model to improve the healthcare and public health system. She has served as the NM KIDS COUNT director, a researcher/evaluator for UNM’s Prevention Research Center, as Deputy Director of the national Caring for Every Child’s Mental Health Campaign, director of the Center for Wellness & Health Communication at Harvard University’s HMO,  and she has consulted for a variety of agencies, including the Notah Begay III Foundation, the NM and MA Departments of Health, University of New Mexico, and the Indian Health Service.

Jeff Dye, President and CEO of the New Mexico Hospital Association, represents 45 member hospitals across the state, Dye is chairman of the Board of Hospital Services Corporation. For the past 26 years, he has worked in small and rural hospital settings and has broad experience in community health planning, hospital operations, legislative initiatives and state and national hospital association governance.

Mary Romero Hart is the senior manager, Health Benefits and Employee Services at Sandia National Laboratories.  She has more than 30 years of progressive HR management including talent acquisition, talent management, labor bargaining, employee benefits, HR policy, performance management, compensation, training and development, wellness programs, on-site clinical services, procurement, budget/financial management, and HRIS project management.  At Sandia National Laboratories, she has been responsible for five departments and accountable for an approximately $125M budget.

Mark Saiz is the insurance and benefits manager for the City of Albuquerque group health plan,  responsible for the procurement, implementation and administration of a group health plan covering more than 19,000 people. Saiz has worked in the insurance industry since 1990, in various private sector insurance organizations and with the State of New Mexico in charge of its group health plan. He is the president of the national board of directors for the State and Local Government Benefits Association (SALGBA).

F. Kiko Torres, MD, is the medical director of Primary Care for True Health New Mexico. Dr. Torres practiced Family Medicine in various settings over the last 15 years, including with Presbyterian Medical Group, as assistant professor at the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico, and as medical director of First Nations Community Health Center.

Mark Tyndall

Mark Tyndall, the current chair of the Board, is the senior director of employee benefits for the Albuquerque Public Schools, one of the largest school districts in the U.S. and the largest in the state of New Mexico with more than 88,000 students in 142 schools and 14,000 employees. Tyndall manages the design, implementation and administration of District-wide employee group health insurance benefit plans in compliance with federal and state rules and regulations. Prior to joining Albuquerque Public Schools, Tyndall served as an Account Executive at Aon Risk Solutions, and was Executive Director of the NM Retiree Health Care Authority. 


Yoder Rene 002   Rene S. Yoder

  René Yoder, a certified Senior Human Resources professional with the Society for Human Resources Management  (SHRM) and the HR Certification Institute (HRCI), has over 20 years of human resources experience, primarily in   benefits. Yoder is the Benefits Director for Central New Mexico Community College (CNMCC), but also worked for   NM State University and Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces for a combined 17+years. She specializes in benefit related programs that impact NM large employers, like the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Affordable Care Act and the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board retirement programs. She is active with local and state HR professional organizations, and the mother of three children.

Mark Young 

Mark Young is the Benefits Manager at PNM Resources. Young has worked in Human Resources for over 10 years, most of that experience at PNM Resources in the Compensation Department, having begun work in the Benefits section in August 2017. His career goals include leading and developing his team, while creating and maintaining a continuously improving work environment. 


Yu David 2017Dr. David J. Yu

Dr. David J. Yu is a Medical Director for Presbyterian Health Plan. He has nine years of experience as a primary care physician and has been extensively involved in hospital medicine, serving for 15 years as medical director of hospitalist programs. 
Dr. Yu has served on numerous national committees for the Society of Hospital Medicine, published articles on hospitalist operation, and lectured on the subject of patient flow at national conferences.

Susan Wilson Hired as Executive Director for New Mexico Coalition for Healthcare Value

Susan WilsonAlbuquerque, NM – The New Mexico Coalition for Healthcare Value is pleased to announce the hire of Susan Wilson as its new Executive Director.  Wilson will replace Patricia Montoya who has been with the Coalition since it was formed in 2015. 

Montoya founded the Coalition, which brings together employers, health plans, providers, healthcare systems and hospitals, as well as state leaders to work on transforming healthcare in the state to improve the value of health care for the people of New Mexico.  This is done by educational summits, advocating for and implementing healthcare data transparency, advocating and providing technical assistance to the health plans and employers to assist them on the journey of developing new payment models, and last but not least assisting employers in implementing value-based contracting. 

Wilson has significant experience in the healthcare and insurance industry.  She has most recently been the president of Susan J Wilson Consulting, providing strategic marketing and public relations council to clients working in a wide variety of industries.  Prior to opening her own consulting firm, Wilson was the Vice President of Business Development for New Mexico Mutual.  She also served as the head of public relations, marketing and governmental affairs for Lovelace Health System before going to New Mexico Mutual. 

“I look forward to working with our business community to grow the Coalition and the voice of New Mexico employers purchasing healthcare,” said Wilson.  “Healthcare is one of employers’ largest costs.  Our Coalition gives employers the tools to make strategic business decisions about the healthcare products they offer their employees.” 

Wilson is an active member of the community.  She currently serves as the Marketing Chair on the Executive Board for United Way of Central New Mexico.  She has held past Board positions with the Association of Commerce and Industry, the UNM Lobo Club, the New Mexico Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the CNM Foundation.  She is also a member of Economic Forum.

Spring 2018 Newsletter

Presenters at the May 9, 2018 “Obesity: It’s Complicated!” Summit described how the obesity epidemic is a significant health and economic issue for New Mexico’s employers, but that there are ways for employers to address this, given the preventive, clinical treatment and wellness initiatives being moved forward in the state. Other articles address what it means for the U.S. and its employers that spending on healthcare continues to grow and that healthcare definitions and language are one of the key barriers in coming together to transform healthcare for the better.

Fall 2018 Newsletter

Participants at the September 2018 “Total Cost of Health Care: Transparency in Action” Summit, presented jointly by the NM Coalition for Healthcare Value and HealthInsight NM came to learn from national and state leaders what recent research and project efforts are telling employers about this issue. Other articles describe efforts undertaken by the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions to promote positive transformation of the U.S. healthcare marketplace and the Coalition’s collaboration with SANOFI to provide current use, health outcome, pharmacotherapy, and financial data for New Mexico on cardiovascular and Type 2 diabetes disease.

Summit Addresses Ways To Tackle Complications of Obesity

Albuquerque, N.M. – The New Mexico Coalition for Healthcare Value (Coalition) is presenting another of its highly-regarded summits, on May 9, 2018 at the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum, to show that although the disease of obesity is a significant problem for New Mexico’s employers (obese employees cost employers roughly 43 percent more than those who are non-obese), the state’s providers, health plans and businesses are making strides in tackling obesity here.
